Start discussing

I know you all have ideas regarding plastic bags.  Start by looking up information on recycling plastic bags.  Here are some random questions you can look into answering:  Is it cost efficient?  Is it energy efficient?  Should plastic bags be banned?  Stores are selling environmentally friendly bags, so why do they still have plastic bags.  Can we get the City of Coconut Creek to ban plastic bags?  If yes, how?  If no, what can we do instead?  If we collect plastic bags, where can we send them to be recycled efficiently?

Plastic bags are used everywhere form dog-walking to wanna-be garbage bags to lunch bags. They are often thrown out - although Publix charges 15 cents a bag unless you shop there. Today I volunteered with the St Vincent da Paul Society handing out Publix bags and paper bags to homes in Parkland for a food drive. So, plastic bags are useful.

However, we only have so much land and plastic bags are usually NOT recycled and NOT biodegradable - meaning they'll be around for our great-grandchildren to choke on.

The City of San Francisco has banned plastic bags effective soon. I believe Coconut Creek should phaze them out - as should Broward COunty and the state of Florida. Grocery boxes made of biodegradable, recycled materials or cloth bags would be much more efficient.

So, I think plastic bags oughht to go and I believe that we as Americans and citizens of the global community have a responsibility to advocate their demise. They are killing animals, polluting Florida's scenic beauty, taking up landfill space and promoting lazy shopping practices.

That's what I think anyway...

We will be collecting plastic bags during the week of 12/1-12/5 through 4th period classes. The students and teacher of the winning class will each receive a reuseable bag. Joei is in the process of acquiring bag donations.

OK. I have e-mailed Publix and am waiting for a response as to if they are willing to work with us in collecting the plastic bags and trading for the green bags. I will let you know as soon as they respond.
